Description
This finely hand-carved stool originates from the Lega people of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, renowned for their refined sculptural traditions. Characteristic of Lega artistry, the figure integrated into the stool features a heart-shaped, concave face with a gently protruding forehead an iconic form that immediately identifies it as Lega. The facial surfaces are traditionally coated with pombe, a white clay applied to emphasize key features and imbue the piece with symbolic meaning.
Stools and figures of this type were historically used within the Bwami Society, the moral, educational, and initiatory institution that shaped social order among the Lega. Objects like this served not only as functional items but also as teaching tools, status symbols, and markers of rank. They represented individuals who held authority, judges, senior members, and respected community leaders, and were displayed during ceremonies to convey lessons, reinforce ethical codes, and denote progression through Bwami levels.
This piece embodies the elegance and symbolism for which Lega sculpture is celebrated, making it both a culturally significant artifact and a striking work of traditional African art.
