Description
This finely cast bronze guinea fowl comes from the Lobi peoples of Burkina Faso, whose metalwork traditions are deeply rooted in ritual and spiritual practice. Created using the lost-wax casting method, each piece is individually formed, making every example unique.
Among the Lobi and related Gur-speaking communities, animal figures such as guinea fowl, birds, crocodiles, and antelope often reference the natural and spiritual worlds that shape daily life. The guinea fowl, a common presence in village compounds, symbolizes sustenance, vigilance, and the interconnectedness between domestic life and ancestral protection.
The sculpture’s compact form, rounded body, and simplified features reflect the restrained yet expressive aesthetic typical of Lobi metalwork. Its surface carries a warm patina consistent with age and handling, enhancing its sculptural presence.
Whether displayed on its own or grouped with other West African bronzes, this Lobi guinea fowl is a strong example of Burkina Faso’s enduring casting traditions — small in scale, yet powerful in cultural resonance.
