Description
This is a hand-carved washboard made by Lobi artisans from southern Burkina Faso. Crafted from a single piece of local hardwood, the board’s raised ridges were carved to help scrub and agitate textiles during hand washing. The surface shows an even, darkened patina and soft wear from decades of use — evidence of everyday life rather than machine finish — which gives the piece strong tactile and visual character.
Lobi objects are practical by nature and often bear a restrained aesthetic: clean, direct carving and an emphasis on utility. This washboard is a fine example — simple, robust, and honest in its workmanship. Small tool marks and rounding on the high points confirm the board was both made and used locally. The back remains plain and undecorated, meant to withstand handling.
Spread across the boundaries of three countries, the Lobi live in individual fort-like family compounds in small villages surrounded by cultivated fields. Within the walls of the compound, family life includes the family head, his wives, married sons, and their families.
