Lobi Wooden Spoon Burkina Faso
Width: 2.5
Depth: 2.5
Description
Hand-carved wooden spoon from the Lobi people of West Africa, originating from the border regions of present-day Burkina Faso, northern Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire. Crafted from a single piece of hardwood, the spoon features a deep, rounded bowl and a sculptural handle, often subtly tapering or carved with an understated geometric form characteristic of Lobi design.
Among the Lobi, utilitarian objects were made with careful attention to balance and proportion. While primarily functional—used for serving and preparing staple foods such as millet porridge—such spoons also reflect the refined aesthetic sensibilities embedded in everyday life. The smooth patina developed through handling and use enhances the surface, revealing age and authenticity.
Lobi woodwork is known for its restrained elegance and emphasis on form rather than elaborate surface decoration. This spoon embodies that tradition: practical, well-balanced, and quietly expressive. It stands as both a domestic implement and a sculptural example of West African craftsmanship.
