Luba Sculptural Head on Custom Base Congo

A striking carved wooden Luba sculptural head, finely modeled with a broad, expressive face and an elaborate, carefully articulated coiffure. The head features prominent arched brows, narrow incised eyes, a projecting nose, and small, pursed lips, creating the calm yet highly stylized expression characteristic of Luba figural sculpture.

Particularly notable is the elaborate coiffure, swept back from the forehead and built up into raised sections at the crown and rear. The hair is further articulated with numerous fine incised lines, reflecting the importance of coiffure in Luba art, where elaborate hairstyles could communicate status, identity, and social significance.

The surface is dark and deeply aged, with extensive wear and patination consistent with age and handling. The head is mounted on a later two-tier wooden display base, which is not considered original to the sculpture.
