Luba Hemba Seated Miniature Figure on Custom Base Congo Rohner Collection

Description
Luba / Hemba Seated Figure from the Democratic Republic of Congo
A striking carved wooden seated figure from the Democratic Republic of Congo, attributed to the Luba / Hemba tradition. The figure is presented on a custom display base.
The figure's compact seated posture, stylized anatomy, and carefully carved facial features are characteristic of the sculptural traditions of the Luba-Hemba cultural region. The warm, aged surface and visible signs of handling and wear contribute to its antique ethnographic character. It is mentioned in Rohner's book that it looks like it has a Kasonga-style beard.
An especially appealing piece for collectors of Central African sculpture, Luba and Hemba art, or historically documented African collections.
Provenance: John R. Rohner Collection
Rohner, a museum curator for decades, aimed his practiced eye for authenticity to African art beginning in the early 1908s. His passion for this art only grew through the decades he built his collection––always with an aim for a broad and representative array of pieces. The collection appears in his book, Art Treasures from African Runners (2000, University Press of Colorado).
