Luba Shankadi Ritual Power Figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Striking carved wooden Luba figure with raised arms and open hands, an elaborate sculptural coiffure incorporating unusual projecting elements, and finely incised scarification across the torso. The figure has a strongly modeled face with a high forehead, almond-shaped eyes, a narrow nose and a composed expression, characteristic of the refined figural tradition associated with Luba sculpture. The body is rendered with broad, powerful proportions, articulated legs and large feet with delineated toes.

The figure retains a number of attached fiber and organic elements, including a cord around the waist and a cluster of small ritual components at the hip. These additions, together with the worn, darkened surface and areas of encrusted patina, suggest a history of use and handling.

Attributed to the Luba Shankadi tradition of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The unusual raised-arm pose and distinctive head ornamentation make this an especially intriguing example of Luba ritual sculpture.
