Description
The Mama can be found on the plateaus of northern Nigeria, stretching from the state of Ebbi to the border of Cameroon. This diverse region, which is difficult to access, has a rich history of ethnic and linguistic diversity due to numerous migrations and invasions.
The plateau region has a rich artistic heritage, particularly as the birthplace of the Nok civilization. This ancient culture is known for producing the earliest examples of terracotta figurative sculpture in West Africa. From an artistic standpoint, the Mama people are known for their abstract sculptures and masks that represent ancestral spirits and serve a key role in social control. Animalistic symbols such as the buffalo and antelope are closely connected to the material wealth derived from successful harvests. Buffalo skulls and masks are also prevalent in the Mama's ancestor cult, as seen in the cult's designated areas and occasionally incorporated into mud walls.
