Mbole Anklet Currency Mali

Description
This substantial copper ankle cuff reflects the Mbole’s classic, elegant design—a slightly flattened circular form with a simple ankle cutout, allowing it to be worn by both men and women as a display of wealth and prestige. Among the Mbole, such massive forged cuffs functioned as currency in rare but important transactions, with larger examples reserved for more significant exchanges.
The Mbole live in independent villages led by chiefs chosen from family elders, with social and spiritual order maintained through influential societies. While they are widely recognized for their Lilwa Society figures, their bold copper ankle cuffs remain some of the most iconic and sought-after forms—valued today for both their sculptural presence and cultural significance.
