Millefiori Elbow Venetian Trade Beads 52 Inch
Description
Millefiori, meaning “a thousand flowers” in Italian, are also known as mosaic beads. Their production involved a two-step process: first creating patterned glass canes (murrine), then applying slices of these canes to a molten glass core to form the bead. This labor-intensive technique required a high level of skill, making finely detailed examples especially rare.
Produced in Venice, millefiori beads were widely exported to Africa from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, where they were traded for goods across established trade networks. While many were made, well-preserved and intricately patterned beads are increasingly scarce today. Surviving sample cards—often dating to the 1920s—illustrate how these beads were originally marketed, though their production began earlier.
This particular strand is a rare example, featuring a cohesive grouping of finely detailed millefiori beads that are increasingly difficult to find in such quality and condition.
In the late 1960s, antique millefiori beads were brought to the United States from Africa and popularized under the name “Trade Beads.” Today, high-quality and delicate millefiori examples are considered rare and highly collectible, valued for both their craftsmanship and historical significance
This strand is not intended to be a ready-to-wear necklace. Although the strand can be worn "as is," the string holding it together is not durable and may break with use. For this reason, we recommend that you restring the beads before wearing them.
