Mumuye Wood Figurine Sculpture Nigeria

The Mumuye community is located in northeastern Nigeria, specifically along the left bank of the Benue River. They have a predominantly agricultural lifestyle, with a focus on cultivating sorghum, millet, and yams. Due to their remote location in rocky hills and savanna lands, the Mumuye were isolated until the late 1950s, resulting in limited knowledge about their culture. However, their unique wooden statues, discovered in 1968, have gained recognition for their distinctive elongated body features. These statues are not direct representations of ancestors, but rather embody protective spirits. Interestingly, Mumuye figures and masks serve multiple purposes, such as the Sukwava masks featuring a slender neck, small head, and prominent ears. Initially used in pre-war ceremonies, they are now worn during rain-making rituals and healing practices.
