Namji Janus Rattle Cameroon

Description
Among the Namji, rattles are used in ceremonial dances, rituals, and community events, serving both rhythmic and symbolic purposes. Janus or double-ended forms are commonly associated with balance, duality, and spiritual presence.
This authentic Namji Janus rattle from Cameroon features the characteristic double-ended form associated with Namji ceremonial objects. The upper section is carved from a single piece of wood with a tapered handle and rounded terminal, showing a deep, aged patina from handling and use.
The central section supports a forked, U-shaped wooden form, below which extends a woven fiber rattle body, tightly basket-woven and decorated with horizontal bands of faded red pigment. The rattle basket remains intact and firmly attached, indicating careful traditional construction.
Small bead elements are visible near the upper junction, consistent with Namji decorative practices. Overall surface wear, patina, and material aging are consistent with an object made for use rather than export
