Description
The Ndebele tribe of the Transvaal is an offshoot of the Zulu and is also linguistically related to the Swazi and the Xhosa (Nguni). The Ndebele is one of the smallest of the seven tribes in South Africa and is divided into two distinct groups, the Northern and the Southern. The Northern group has largely been amalgamated into the neighboring Sotho tribes while the Southern Ndebele have maintained their customs. This publication documents some of the images, through which they proclaimed their identity. In their artifacts, created with an inherent sense of design and skilled craftsmanship, the Ndebele have recorded some of the social and economic changes in their environment.
