Description
Hand-carved in Tanzania, this Nyamwezi Figural Engagement Hair Pick was used by women for special occasions.
The Nyamwezi, a Bantu ethnic group in East Africa, constitute the second-largest ethnic community in Tanzania. Their ancestral homeland includes regions such as Tabora, Singida, Shinyanga, and Katavi. The term "Nyamwezi," of Swahili origin, translates to "people of the moon" or "people of the west."
Marriage holds significant importance in Nyamwezi culture. The courtship process involves a young man, accompanied by one or two male friends, visiting a potential bride's home to discuss the prospect of marriage. The young woman consults with female elders, and if she agrees, bridewealth negotiations commence. Once the bridewealth is settled, the groom's father hosts a grand feast. Following the payment of bridewealth, a joyous wedding ceremony unfolds, marked by feasting, dancing, and singing.
