Description
Early 20th-century Hausa-language Bible and Hymn Book, printed by Billing and Sons in Guildford, England. This edition reflects missionary-era printing for West Africa, where Hausa remains one of the most widely spoken languages.
The text is printed in Romanized Hausa, with frequent use of “Allah” for God and traditional narrative structure consistent with early Hausa Bible translations. “Farawa” corresponds to the Book of Genesis.
Bound in a worn but attractive leather cover, showing clear signs of age and use, adding to its historical character.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
