Description
Shona Fiber Ceremonial Wig / Headdress from Zimbabwe
A traditional Shona ceremonial wig or headdress from Zimbabwe, constructed from handwoven natural plant fibers forming a dense curtain of flowing strands. These fiber wigs were worn during ritual dances and ceremonial performances, where movement and transformation played an important role in the presentation.
The organic raffia-like fibers create a dramatic silhouette and striking texture, giving the piece a strong sculptural appeal. Mounted for display, it stands as an evocative example of Southern African ceremonial artistry and performance traditions.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
