Old Triangular Bohemian "Conus Shell" Trade Beads MATTER COLLECTION
Description
Bohemian Glass "Conus Shell" African Trade Beads, spaced with large coffee bean glass beads.
A rare strand of antique Bohemian glass trade beads fashioned in imitation of prized Conus shell currency ornaments. Produced in Bohemia for the African trade during the late 19th century, these boldly colored beads feature distinctive triangular forms decorated with molded concentric arc motifs inspired by traditional shell currency. Originally manufactured to satisfy the growing demand for shell valuables in West Africa, these inventive glass replicas became highly sought-after trade items in their own right.
The strand displays a vibrant combination of red, yellow, and green beads separated by black glass spacers. Examples of these early molded glass trade beads are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in such well-preserved condition. A significant addition to any collection of African trade beads or historic trade currency.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
This strand is not intended to be a ready-to-wear necklace. Although the strand can be worn "as is," the raffia holding it together is not durable and may break with use. For this reason, we recommend that you restring the beads before wearing them.
