Description
Gift Muza (Zimbabwe, 1966–1996)
This charming owl sculpture by Zimbabwean artist Gift Muza beautifully reflects the warmth and simplicity that characterize his work within the Shona stone carving tradition.
Carved from richly patterned serpentine stone, the piece features softly rounded, flowing forms that emphasize balance and harmony. The owl’s wide circular eyes are delicately incised, giving it an alert yet gentle expression. Its small, stylized beak sits subtly between the smooth contours of the face, while the body and wings rise in elegant vertical planes that frame the figure with quiet strength.
The natural veining of the stone — in tones of grey, olive, and warm earth — enhances the organic presence of the sculpture. Muza skillfully allowed the character of the stone to guide the form, a hallmark of the Zimbabwean Shona movement, where the artist reveals rather than forces the spirit within the material.
Owls are often associated with wisdom, watchfulness, and spiritual awareness. In Shona culture, animals frequently carry layered symbolic meaning, and Muza’s interpretation conveys a sense of calm protection and thoughtful observation. The simplified, almost whimsical facial features add a touch of humanity and tenderness, making the piece both modern and timeless.
Gift Muza, active during the 1980s and 1990s, was part of the second generation of Zimbabwean stone sculptors who brought international recognition to Shona art. Despite his short life, his work continues to be sought after for its sincerity, charm, and masterful handling of stone.
This owl sculpture is a fine example of Muza’s ability to merge symbolism with approachable form — a serene and contemplative presence suitable for both interior display and serious collections of African contemporary sculpture.
