Description
The Pende people originated in modern-day Angola and migrated in the 1600s due to the Kingdom of Lunda's development. With only around 250,000 individuals, they are divided into Eastern and Western Pende but consider themselves one ethnic group. Organized around extended family groups in a matrilineal society, they lack a typical chieftaincy, and family holds significant importance. The eldest maternal uncle often leads the family. Ancestor worship is crucial, involving rituals and offerings to appease ancestors. Neglect may result in sickness, and diviners may demand offerings to a wooden sculpture for ancestral appeasement.
