Salampasu Basketry Beads Necklace Congo
Description
The Salampasu people, numbering 60,000, reside on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly known as Zaire) and Angola. They foster robust trade and cultural connections with their neighboring communities to the south, namely the Tschokwe (Chokwe) and the Lunda, to whom they offer tribute. The Salampasu society operates under the authority of a select group of high-ranking chiefs, supported by territorial chiefs overseeing village chiefs. This hierarchical system is complemented by a warriors' society, ensuring a balance of power. While the Salampasu primarily sustain themselves through hunting, the women also engage in agricultural activities.
