Senufo Gurunsi Bird Figure 50 Inch Côte d'Ivoire
Width: 16.0
Depth: 4.0
Description
Africa continues to surprise with sculptures that are unique and objects that challenge. This exceptional figure has no equivalent in the literature on African Art so the identification is based on stylistic parallels. Its purpose is unknown and perhaps undocumented. The Senufo have a wide range of objects that were associated with the men's Poro secret society. An additional factor leading to an identification among the Senufo is the shape of the head which is shown as a bird's head and beak. For the Senufo the bird plays an important role during initiations, planting ceremonies, and funerals. The figure itself raises a number of questions that will be answered in time, meanwhile, it will serve as a challenge when added to a collection.
