Description

A wonderful traditional Korhogo cloth, hand-drawn and painted on natural hand-woven cotton with earthy brown vegetal pigment. The textile features an engaging composition of birds, fish, animals, and stylized figures, surrounded by multiple bands of intricate geometric borders including zigzags, waves, triangles, and other repeating motifs.

The imagery includes several large birds, fish, quadrupeds, and distinctive stylized forms, all rendered with fine linear detail. The central animals are particularly beautifully drawn, with patterned bodies and carefully articulated features. The overall composition has the characteristic graphic quality associated with Senufo painted textiles from the Korhogo region of northern Côte d’Ivoire.

Korhogo cloths are traditionally hand-painted or drawn with natural pigments and are known for their symbolic imagery drawn from the natural and spiritual worlds. Animal motifs, including birds, fish, and mammals, are frequently incorporated into these textiles.

The cloth has a wonderful aged, earthy appearance, with natural variations in the cotton ground and pigment characteristic of handmade textiles. The irregular edges and variations in the painted lines further emphasize its handmade nature.
