Description
Handwoven storage vessel attributed to the Luo people of East Africa. This sculptural basket features a tightly coiled fiber body with a distinctive hourglass form, reinforced by bands of braided leather and stitched hide. The upper rim is bound with thicker material for durability, while the midsection is wrapped in a lattice of leather strips, adding both structure and visual texture.
Traditionally used for storing or transporting goods, vessels like this also reflect skilled craftsmanship and practical design suited to daily life. The natural patina, wear to the leather bindings, and slight irregularities in the weave indicate age and use.
A striking example of functional African basketry with strong presence and organic character.
