Songye Nkishi Kifwebe Miniature Power Figure Congo 12 Inch

A standing Songye female power figure, known as Nkishi, exhibits a cylindrical neck, shoulders rounded, and arms elongated and bent, with broad hands embracing a rounded abdomen adorned with a magical pouch and raffia skirt. The knees are bent, leading to broad feet connected to a spherical base. This piece features the stylized Kifwebe mask attached to the power figure itself. Comes on a custom-made wood base.

In larger Nkishi representations, the figure serves as a guardian for the entire community, acting as a mediator between humans and spirits to address ailments. Many believe these figures bring fertility and good fortune. When not in use, the nkishi is placed in a sanctuary, safeguarded by a guardian.

The Songye, an ethnic group in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are renowned for their Kifwebe masks, significant artifacts crafted for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret Society. "Kifwebe" translates to "Mask" in the Songye language, symbolizing a crucial aspect of their cultural heritage. These masks, recognizable by elongated faces and linear incisions portraying animals like crocodiles, birds, and zebras, boast vibrant colors—black, white, and red—with male masks featuring a tricolored striated pattern and female ones predominantly white with black and red accents. Utilized in dances and rituals, these masks embody spiritual forces and offer protection from malevolent spirits. Alongside masks, Songye art encompasses sculptures and figurines depicting humans or animals, sculpted from various materials like wood.
