The Songye people, residing in the southern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, possess a rich cultural heritage and are renowned for their Nkisi or Nkishi power objects. Linked by a common mythical ancestor, Kongolo, with the Luba people, the Songye share a historical and cultural affinity. Linguistic ties further reinforce their close relationship. Geographically located in the heart of the Luba homeland, the Songye territory is divided by the Lomani River, influencing distinct social structures in the east and west. These regional differences extend to artistic styles, with the eastern Songye known for intricate sculptures like Nkisi, while the western Songye excel in masks featuring bold designs and expressive faces. The Songye people's origins, cultural practices, and art are shaped by historical interactions, geography, and political dynamics.
