The Suku polity originated with refugees escaping Lunda invasions in the seventeenth century, settling in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although culturally similar to the Kongo peoples, their political structure reflects a distinct Lunda influence. The arrival of the Yaka and Lunda led to the division of the Suku into two autonomous groups. Primarily engaged in farming, with occasional communal hunts, the Suku's economic activities sustain their community of around 80,000 people. Their sculptures, characterized by enlarged heads and intricate features, serve both ceremonial and spiritual purposes, representing fertility in large figures and embodying ancestral or malevolent spirits in crouching fetish figures.
