Wooden thumb piano from Zimbabwe, with a beautiful geometric design carved into it. Makes a lovely sound.
Thumb pianos are traditional musical instruments known throughout the African continent. Varieties of thumb pianos are made found in western, central, and southern Africa. The thumb piano is used to accompany an orchestra or a singer. Usually they are played by story tellers and specialists of the clan history and the chief's court musicians.

From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
