Description
Beautiful and unique mix of old terracotta beads with hand-painted clay beads, found in Mali, Africa.
A compelling grouping of old tomb beads and hand-painted clay beads from Mali, West Africa. Recovered from historic burial contexts, these beads reflect long-standing traditions of adornment, spirituality, and status within the cultures of the Inland Niger Delta region.
Tomb Beads: Stone, glass, and mineral beads placed in graves were often worn in life and carried into burial as personal possessions. Their presence suggests social identity, protection in the afterlife, and the enduring value of adornment in Sahelian societies. Surface weathering and mineral deposits are consistent with age and burial conditions.
Painted Clay Beads: Hand-formed from local clay and decorated with simple linear or geometric motifs, these beads demonstrate regional craftsmanship using readily available materials. The painted surfaces — often in earthy reds, blacks, and whites — reflect aesthetic traditions seen across Mali’s historic communities. Their lightweight nature made them practical for everyday wear while still visually striking.
Together, these beads offer a tangible connection to Mali’s rich archaeological heritage and the enduring human impulse toward beauty, symbolism, and remembrance. Ideal for collectors of African trade beads, ancient adornment, or culturally significant artifacts.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
This strand is not intended to be a ready-to-wear necklace. Although the strand can be worn "as is," the string holding it together is not durable and may break with use. For this reason, we recommend that you restring the beads before wearing them.
