Description
Handwoven basket made by the Tonga people of Zambia. Traditionally crafted from natural plant fibers, these baskets are woven using tight coiling techniques and decorated with bold geometric patterns.
Tonga Baskets are commonly used for winnowing grain, serving food, or as household storage items. Today they are also appreciated for their fine craftsmanship and striking graphic designs, reflecting the long-standing basketry traditions of the Tonga people.

From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
