Turkana Snuff Container Kenya MATTER COLLECTION

Description
This Turkana snuff container from Kenya is a striking example of traditional East African craftsmanship, skillfully made from a combination of animal horn and wood. Designed for both function and portability, the container would have been used to store and carry powdered tobacco, an important part of daily life and social exchange among the Turkana people.
The smooth, curved form of the horn is complemented by a carved wooden stopper, often shaped for a secure fit and ease of use. Natural variations in the horn create subtle tonal shifts, giving each piece a unique character, while the wood adds warmth and contrast. Over time, handling and use have developed a rich patina, enhancing its visual appeal and authenticity.
Compact yet sculptural, this snuff container reflects the resourcefulness of Turkana artisans, who utilized available natural materials to create durable, functional objects with understated beauty.
