Tutsi Gathering Basket Rwanda
Width: 19.0
Depth: 17.0
Description
Large Tutsi gathering basket that has been heavily used. The leather base is broken.
A large and deeply formed Tutsi coiled fiber carrying basket. The basket is constructed from tightly wrapped and coiled natural fibers, creating a remarkably dense, durable surface with subtle bands of dark brown and black. Its broad open mouth tapers dramatically to a narrow base, which is reinforced with an old stitched leather covering.
Made for practical domestic use, possibly carrying grain, produce, or other household goods, the basket has a wonderfully sculptural presence and strong evidence of long use. The leather base has significant wear and loss, while the fiber body shows scattered breaks, abrasions, and old repairs consistent with age and field use. A compelling traditional object with excellent display character.
