The Weya 4-panel story appliquéd quilt showcases the daily life of women in a Zimbabwean village, blending African artistic expression with Western influence. Unlike previous perceptions of Western-influenced African art being less valuable, contemporary art resulting from the interaction of Western and African cultures is gaining popularity. African art has evolved through various trends, including traditional ritual art, colonial-era art by African artists trained by Europeans, and self-taught artists producing high-quality paintings, sculptures, and fabrics. The Weya quilt, taught by European artist Ilse Noy to rural Zimbabwean women, has become a thriving industry sold worldwide. The diverse themes in the quilts reflect the Weya women's culture, portraying aspects of marriage, family, sexuality, death, spirits, ancestors, hopes, and worries. These quilts are not only inspiring expressions of humanness but also significant sources of revenue for talented artists.
We do not recommend laundering textiles, and do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing (NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears.
