Wooden Doll with Raffia Skirt Liberia MATTER COLLECTION
Width: 1.75
Depth: 1.5
Description
Hand-carved wooden doll from Liberia, featuring a natural raffia fiber skirt. Dolls like this are often made as children’s toys and may also reflect traditional dress and hairstyles of local communities.
Carved from a single piece of wood and decorated with simple details, these figures highlight the creativity of local artisans and the use of natural materials such as wood and raffia in everyday cultural objects.
Can stand on its own, but not very well slightly rounded base.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
