Yellow Flower and Green King Venetian Trade Bead Strand 32inch
Description
Trade beads, often made of glass, were crucial in historical trade between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They were more than just decorative items; they served as currency, symbols of status, and carriers of cultural stories. Produced mainly in Europe, these beads gained immense popularity in Africa, where they were exchanged for valuable resources. Today, these beads are cherished by collectors and artists alike for their beauty, historical significance, and the stories they tell about global trade and cultural exchange.
"King Beads" are vintage Venetian bicone beads renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, created through winding and marvering techniques. Coined during the peak of African Trade bead imports in the 1970s, these beads earned their regal title due to a legendary association with African "Kings" or Chiefs. With diverse colors, intricate designs, and a consistent bicone shape, these beads originated in the mid-1800s and continued production until the 1920s. Notably featured on Moses Lewin Levin's bead sample cards from 1865 and later on Sick and Co. cards, "King" beads remain culturally significant, prominently displayed in Ghana's Dipo Initiation ceremonies. These highly collectible beads grace private collections across America, Africa, Japan, and Europe, embodying the rich history and artistry of Venetian bead craftsmanship.
This strand is not intended to be a ready-to-wear necklace. Although the strand can be worn "as is," the string holding it together is not durable and may break with use. For this reason, we recommend that you restring the beads before wearing them.
