Yellow Pigeon Egg Trade Beads
Description
The term “trade beads” refers to glass beads produced primarily in Europe—especially in Venice and Bohemia—from the late 1400s through the early 1900s. These beads were widely traded across Africa and the Americas, where they became valued not only as adornment but also as symbols of wealth and status.
This strand features striking yellow “pigeon egg” beads, named for their bold size, rounded form, and softly translucent glass. Their warm yellow tone gives them a luminous quality, making them especially eye-catching and desirable among collectors. The larger scale of these beads sets them apart, lending a strong visual presence whether worn or displayed.
Venetian makers dominated the production of trade beads during the height of this period in the 19th and early 20th centuries, creating millions of beads that traveled across continents through complex trade networks. Over time, collectors and traders began assigning descriptive names—like “pigeon egg”—to distinguish particular styles based on color, shape, and character.
What makes these beads particularly compelling is their journey. Having passed through generations and across cultures, they carry subtle signs of age and use while remaining beautifully intact. Today, yellow pigeon egg beads are prized for their rich color, substantial form, and enduring connection to the history of global trade and adornment.
This strand is not intended to be a ready-to-wear necklace. Although the strand can be worn "as is," the raffia holding it together is not durable and may break with use. For this reason, we recommend that you restring the beads before wearing them.
