Description
Finely carved Yoruba-style female portrait bust from Nigeria. The figure is depicted with a ceremonial headband featuring a prominent forehead medallion, elongated side ornaments, and intricately carved neck adornments. Executed in a dense dark hardwood with a rich polished patina, the sculpture reflects the naturalistic portrait traditions associated with Yoruba courtly and commemorative carving. Mid-20th century.

Provenance:
Gail Bell was a world traveler all of her life, having visited every continent on the planet. Along the way, she collected a plethora of art. She was director of many museums throughout her career, including the Mizel Museum and the St Louis Art Museum, where she was education director.
