Description
The Zela female figure is crafted as a veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. Crafted from hard wood, the Luba female figure is distinct with its hair, torso markings, and protruding belly.
The Zela Peoples assimilated numerous customs and traditions from the Luba culture. Situated between the Luvua River and Lake Kisalé, they are currently divided into four chiefdoms. The Zela community reveres a mythical ancestral couple, often depicted in statues, and regularly makes offerings to the natural spirits inhabiting their village surroundings.
