Description
Zigua (Zigula), Tanga Region, Tanzania Ritual / Fetish Figure
A striking carved wooden figure attributed to the Zigua (Zigula) people of the Tanga region of northeastern Tanzania. The figure displays the highly stylized characteristics associated with Zigua sculpture, including an oversized rounded head, prominent ears, simplified facial features, compact torso, and elongated limbs.
Cord or fiber bindings encircle portions of the figure, adding to its distinctive ritual appearance. The dark, aged surface exhibits considerable patina, wear, and evidence of handling.
Zigua sculptural traditions include figures associated with initiation, healing, protection, ancestral or spirit representation, and other ritual practices. The precise original function of this particular figure is unknown, so it is best described as a ritual or fetish figure rather than assigning a specific use.
Zigua sculptural traditions of northeastern Tanzania include figures associated with initiation, ancestral or spirit representation, healing, protection, and divination. Comparable Zigua figures are frequently characterized by frontal human forms, large heads, cords or bindings, beads, and surfaces bearing evidence of applied ritual materials. Some documented examples are specifically described as fetish or power figures.
Aged and heavily handled surface with expected wear, losses, cracks, abrasions, and other signs of age and use. Please examine photographs carefully for condition details.
