Description
Fragment of Zulu Beaded Relic, South Africa
An evocative fragment of a traditional beaded object, attributed to the Zulu people of Southern Africa. This piece preserves richly patterned glass beadwork in bold geometric designs, executed in classic Zulu color palettes of white, red, blue, yellow, and green.
Originally part of a larger ceremonial or personal item, possibly an adornment or prestige object, this fragment reveals the skilled craftsmanship of hand-applied beadwork stitched over a leather or organic core. Visible fiber bindings, exposed structure, and areas of wear speak to age, use, and authenticity.
While incomplete, this piece offers a compelling glimpse into traditional Zulu bead artistry. Ideal for collectors, study collections, or display as an artifact emphasizing texture, history, and craftsmanship.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
Vintage item, and the threads might be fragile due to being in storage for 20+ years. Lots of loose threads and beads. Broken off wood.
