African Nguni-Style Iron Spear / Assegai, Possibly Zulu, South Africa

This impressive African spear features a long, slender wooden shaft fitted with a substantial forged iron spearhead. The broad, elongated blade has a distinctive leaf-like form with decorative/protruding elements at the base of the blade and a long iron tang extending into the shaft. The opposite end of the spear terminates in a sharp metal spike, adding to the unusual construction and distinctive character of the piece.

Measuring approximately 65 inches in overall length, the spear has a commanding presence and is an excellent example of traditional African ironworking and weapon design. The form is consistent with Nguni-style assegai/throwing spears associated with southern Africa, including the Zulu and neighboring peoples. While the exact ethnic attribution cannot be confirmed from form alone, its construction and proportions are strongly suggestive of the broader Nguni spear tradition.

The iron exhibits an aged, naturally oxidized surface with visible patina consistent with age and use. The wooden shaft displays appropriate wear and character throughout.
